Biju Janta Dal’s women’s wing Biju Mahila Janata Dal (BMJD) party named Meera as Vice President recently making her the first transwoman to ever hold the position. The 38-year-old social activist is a resident of Begunia block, Khurda district. She has won several awards for her work in protecting the rights of marginalised groups who are vulnerable to HIV and AIDS across the country, including the Best Transgender Leader in India award by UNDP, NACO and HIV Alliance in 2016.
